List Of Streams After 10th (2026 Guide)

    • December 24, 2025
    • 10 min read

When I was in Class 10, I didn’t know what I wanted to choose. I just knew everyone around me was buzzing with opinions. Science, Commerce, Arts, “keep options open,” “don’t waste your potential.” I picked based on what sounded safe, not what actually made sense for me.

If you’re reading this now, whether you’re a confused 10th grader or a parent trying to help, here’s what I learned: a stream isn’t your identity. It’s just the door to certain careers. Pick the wrong door, and you waste two years. Pick the right one, and everything falls into place.

The question “which stream is best after 10th?” doesn’t have a single answer because the “best” stream depends entirely on your strengths, interests, and where you actually want your career to go. This guide gives you a complete list of streams after the 10th and more. Read on!

What streams can you choose after 10th?

After Class 10, you can choose from three main streams: Science, Commerce, and Arts. There are also vocational and diploma options if you want hands-on training instead of traditional academics. Here’s taking the deep dive:

    1. Science Stream

Choose Science if you’re naturally good at math and logical problem-solving. This stream demands long study hours and prepares you for competitive exams like JEE and NEET.

Be honest with yourself. If math and chemistry felt tough in Class 10, they get much harder in 11th and 12th. As one student warned:

“If your math and chemistry are weak in 10th, you will faint when you see the portion in 11th.”

    PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics)

You’ll study Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, and one optional subject (Computer Science/Physical Education/Economics).

    Career paths include:

    • Engineering fields: Computer Science, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Chemical, Aerospace, Automobile
    • Tech careers: Data Science, AI & Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Software Development, App Development
    • Architecture, Aviation (Pilot training), Defense Services (NDA), BCA, B.Tech, BSc in IT/Computer Science/Physics/Mathematics

    PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)

You’ll study Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, and one optional subject (Mathematics/Physical Education/Psychology).

    Career paths include:

    • Medical: MBBS, BDS, BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homeopathy), Veterinary Science
    • Healthcare: Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy (B.Pharm, D.Pharm)
    • Life sciences: Biotechnology, Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry
    • Paramedical fields (Radiology, Lab Technology), Forensic Science, Research (BSc to MSc to PhD)

PCMB (All Four: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology)

You’ll study Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and English. This keeps both engineering and medical options open. You can pursue everything available in PCM or PCB: engineering, medicine, biomedical engineering, computational biology, and bioinformatics.

PCMB has the heaviest workload. Only choose this if you’re genuinely torn between engineering and medicine and can handle four demanding subjects simultaneously.

    2. Commerce Stream

Commerce is for students interested in business, finance, economics, and how money works. If you enjoy understanding markets, want to build your own business someday, or see yourself in a corporate career, Commerce fits.

    What you’ll study:

    • Core subjects: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, English
    • Optional subjects: Mathematics (highly recommended), Applied Mathematics, Entrepreneurship, Informatics Practices

Many students skip Maths in Commerce, thinking it makes things easier. That’s a mistake. As one student put it:

“Applied maths is the only thing which will add value… others are just extra CBSE fillers.”

Commerce with Maths keeps important doors open. Business analytics, economics programs, data roles, and many entrance exams need it. Top Indian universities and colleges abroad often require or prefer Commerce students to have Maths. Without it, you limit yourself later.

    Career paths after Commerce

    • Finance and accounting: Chartered Accountancy (CA), Company Secretary (CS), Banking, Investment Analysis, Stock Market, and Trading
    • Business and management: BBA to MBA, Business Analytics, Marketing, HR, Consulting, E-commerce, Digital Business
    • Economics and data: Economics (BA/BSc), Business Analytics, Market Research (needs Maths background)
    • Entrepreneurship: Start your own business, Family business management, Startup ecosystem roles

    3. Arts/Humanities Stream

Arts (also called Humanities) is for students who enjoy reading, writing, creativity, and understanding people and society. If you’re drawn to storytelling, psychology, history, or social issues, this stream helps you build those interests into real careers.

    What you’ll study:

    • Core subjects include Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, History, Geography, English Literature, Fine Arts, Philosophy, and Home Science.
    • You can mix subjects based on your interests. There’s flexibility to create combinations that match your goals.

    Career Paths After Arts

    • Civil services and administration: UPSC (IAS, IPS, IFS). Most UPSC toppers come from Humanities backgrounds because this stream builds strong analytical and writing skills.
    • Law: 5-year integrated law courses (BA LLB), Corporate Law, Human Rights Law, Environmental Law
    • Media and communication: Journalism, Content Writing, Copywriting, Film and Television, Digital Media, Public Relations, Advertising
    • Psychology and counseling: Clinical Psychology, Organizational Psychology, Career Counseling, Therapy (growing demand in schools, corporations, hospitals)
    • Social sciences and research: Policy Analysis, Social Work, NGO sector, Think Tanks, Academic Research, Teaching
    • Design and creative fields: Fashion Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design, UX Writing, Animation, Photography

    5. Vocational & Skill-Based Paths After 10th

Vocational paths are for students who want to start earning earlier, prefer hands-on work over academics, or are interested in building technical and creative skills fast.

    Polytechnic Diplomas (3 years)

Engineering-focused diplomas in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, Automobile, and Architecture.

After completing a polytechnic diploma, you can work as a junior engineer or technician. You can also enter engineering degree programs directly in the second year (lateral entry).

    ITI Courses (Industrial Training Institutes)

Short-term courses (6 months to 2 years) for trades like Electrician, Mechanic, Fitter, Welder, Carpenter, Plumber, and Computer Operator.

ITI graduates get direct employment in factories, workshops, construction sites, and technical roles. Government jobs also reserve positions for ITI-certified candidates.

    Paramedical Diplomas

Courses in Radiology, Lab Technology, Dialysis Technology, Nursing Assistance, Physiotherapy Assistance, and Medical Imaging.

These lead to hospital jobs, diagnostic centers, or healthcare startups. The medical field always needs trained paramedical staff.

    Hospitality & Tourism

Diplomas in Hotel Management, Travel and Tourism, Culinary Arts, and Front Office Operations.

Career options include hotels, airlines, travel agencies, event management, and the tourism industry.

    Creative & Design Diplomas

Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Animation, Video Editing, Interior Design, Photography, and Visual Effects.

These courses lead to jobs in design studios, advertising agencies, film production, e-commerce brands, or freelance careers.

Digital Skill Tracks (High Growth Area)

Short-term certifications and skill programs in:

    • Coding and web development
    • Digital marketing and SEO
    • Social media management
    • UI/UX design
    • Video editing and content creation
    • No-code tools (website builders, automation)

These skills are in high demand. You don’t need a degree to start working. Just a strong portfolio and real skills. Many digital marketers, freelance designers, and content creators earn well without traditional college degrees.

    Emerging & new-age career tracks

Many high-demand careers today don’t strictly require Science. They care more about your skills and portfolio than which stream you picked in Class 11.

The old divisions (Science = tech, Commerce = business, Arts = creative) are breaking down. If you’re strategic about building the right skills, you can enter fields that weren’t even options when your parents were students.

    Data science

Science or Commerce with Maths, both work. What matters more is learning statistics, Python, and data analysis tools.

    Cybersecurity

Science or Commerce backgrounds can enter through certifications and skill-building. Many cybersecurity professionals don’t have traditional CS degrees.

    AI & Machine Learning

Science is preferred but not mandatory. Commerce students with strong Maths and coding skills can enter through specialized courses.

    App development & coding

Any stream works. What matters is learning programming languages (Python, JavaScript, etc.) and building real projects. Many successful developers are self-taught or learned through boot camps.

Graphic design, animation, UI/UX design, game design

Arts and Commerce students can easily enter these fields through design diplomas or online courses. Science isn’t required. Your portfolio (what you can actually create) matters more than your stream.

Digital marketing, content creation, social media strategy, e-commerce management

All streams are welcome. These careers value communication skills, creativity, and understanding consumer behavior more than technical knowledge. Many successful digital marketers come from Arts or Commerce backgrounds.

Climate studies, environmental management, renewable energy

Science is preferred for technical roles, but Arts students can enter policy, advocacy, research, and NGO work in sustainability. Commerce students fit into green business and ESG (environmental, social, governance) roles.

Behavioral economics, public policy, and social research

Perfect for Commerce and Arts combinations. These fields study human behavior, decision-making, and societal systems. No Science background needed.

Game design, game writing, esports management, competitive gaming

Open to all streams. The gaming industry needs storytellers (Arts), business strategists (Commerce), and coders (Science). There’s room for everyone.

How to decide which stream to choose after 10th

Stop asking “which stream is best?” and start asking “which stream fits me?” Here are the questions that actually matter:

    #1 Academic Fit

    • Which subjects drain you? If Math and Chemistry feel like torture in Class 10, Science in 11th will be worse. If reading long chapters exhausts you, Arts might not suit you.
    • Which subjects feel manageable, even interesting? That’s your signal. As one student said: “Look at your 10th scores—weak maths means commerce with maths might be painful.”

    #2 Personality Fit

What kind of work do you prefer?

    • Theory and reading → Arts
    • Numbers and logic → Science or Commerce
    • Building and doing → Vocational paths

Do you handle competition well? Science streams (JEE/NEET) mean constant competitive pressure. Commerce and Arts offer more flexibility. If competition stresses you out, factor that in.

    #3 Career Fit

    • What work life do you imagine? Office job? Creative work? Business? Helping people? Your stream should match realistic career goals.
    • Do you want stability or entrepreneurship? For stable careers (engineering, CA, civil services), pick traditional streams. For building your own thing, skills matter more than stream.

    #4 Practical Fit

    • Can your family afford coaching? Science coaching (JEE/NEET) costs ₹1-3 lakh per year. CA prep needs coaching, too. Arts cost less.
    • Does your city have good teachers for this stream? A mediocre Science education is worse than a strong Commerce or Arts foundation.
    • How long can you study? Engineering takes 4 years, medicine 5.5+ years, CA 4-5 years. Vocational routes get you working in 1-3 years.

Don’t pick a stream because friends chose it or relatives say it’s “better.” Your stream is your next two years of daily life. Pick something you can handle.

You can always come back to where you started

Look, your stream choice matters for the next two years. That’s it. Not your whole life.

Plenty of students switch if things get too heavy. Polytechnic students jump into engineering degrees later. Arts students end up in law, policy, and even startups. Commerce students learn coding and land tech jobs.

The idea that picking a stream in Class 11 decides everything? That’s just not true. It affects what you study next and which doors open more easily. But it doesn’t lock you in.

Pick what fits your strengths right now. Learn skills that actually matter. And don’t stress too much about getting it “perfect.”
