Why First Aid Room in School Should Be Mandatory?

    • May 15, 2025
    • 6 min read

With school playground injuries commonplace in India and almost everywhere, the importance of a first aid room in school cannot be overstated. Not only minor playground injuries but sudden illnesses and other medical emergencies require prompt treatment. Hence, having a well-equipped first aid room is indispensable for schools.

In this article, we will navigate the importance of first aid rooms in school, common medical emergencies, the first aid room equipment list, and how schools can train their staff and students to foster readiness in dealing with minor and major medical emergencies in school.

Importance of first aid rooms in school

As schools are fundamentally, morally, and legally obliged to protect every single student, it is the responsibility of the school administration to set up a well-equipped first aid room in school.

Here is why first aid rooms are important:

    Quick emergency support

From minor bruises to allergic reactions- schools often witness situations that require quick medical intervention. A well-equipped first aid room provides fast-acting emergency support.

Rapid first aid response arrests escalation of injuries or health emergencies, preventing the chances of complications or exacerbations.

    Support and reassurance

A safe learning environment provides mental support and reassurance to students, parents, staff, and administration.

Ill or injured students feel safe and secure under special care and attention in their vulnerable times.

    Health education and training

Schools with a dedicated first-aid room often conduct health and safety education for students and teachers. First-aid training sessions and lectures on preventive medicine and practices foster mindfulness and risk consciousness. Health education also prepares students and staff members to deal with health emergencies with confidence.

Moreover, the knowledge of health and wellness inspires them to adopt measures that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Most common medical emergencies in school

Understanding medical emergencies is the first step toward establishing a safe environment in a school. If staff or administration knows how to act promptly after a minor accident or health emergency, they can avert major catastrophes. For instance, providing first aid for minor cuts and bruises can eliminate the chances of sepsis or severe complications.

Here are the most common medical emergencies in school-

    Minor cuts and abrasions

These could be due to lab equipment, sports equipment, playground injuries, falls, manhandling art supplies, etc.

    Bruises and sprains

Bruises and sprains commonly occur as a result of playground accidents.

    Fractures and head injuries

Sports-related impact injuries are common in schools.

    Asthma attack

Certain factors like physical and mental stress, exposure to allergens, etc. can trigger an episode in asthmatic students.

    Allergic reactions

Allergens, such as pollens, dust, bee stings, or certain foods can trigger allergic reactions. If not attended to on time, it can be life-threatening (anaphylactic reaction).

    Blackouts

Fainting due to dehydration, prolonged standing, anxiety, and other reasons is also common.

    Insect bites

Depending on location, environment, and season, insect bites can occur in schools. Although mosquito bites can lead to severe consequences like dengue, bee stings, snake bites, etc., require emergency treatment.

    Choking

Choking on food or non-food objects also creates an emergency situation.

    Diabetes

Diabetic students might experience low or high blood sugar and require quick medical attention.

    Difficulty breathing

Asthma, allergic reaction, infections, foreign body aspiration, or underlying illness can lead to respiratory distress.

    Seizures

Students suffering from neurological disorders, such as epilepsy might experience seizures.

    Lab injuries

Eye injuries, chemical burns, cuts, inhalation of toxic substances, etc. can occur due to certain factors, like manhandling of chemicals and equipment, lack of safety measures, and poor ventilation in science labs.

    Heat stroke

Heat stroke and exhaustion are common in the summer season.

    First aid room requirements

First aid room requirements in school go beyond a small first-aid kit with a few over-the-counter medicines. From well-equipped first aid kits to high-quality medical equipment, communication devices, protective gear, and comfortable beds, every school should have a proper set-up to tend to injured or ill students until they get professional medical help.

Here is a detailed account of first aid room requirements in school-

    First aid room

A decent-sized room with proper ventilation, privacy curtains, a comfortable bed, pillows, blankets, an upright chair, seating, and a sink is required to offer effective first aid in cases of medical emergencies. A school should create a comfortable space to make students feel comfortable, protected, and cared for.

First aid kit and medical equipment

First aid room equipment list includes antiseptic solution or wipes, saline, bandages, gauze pads, cotton rolls, scissors, tweezers, hot pads, cold packs, safety pins, absorbent pads, oxygen mask, thermometer, sterile eyewash, adhesive tape, and splint.

    Medications

Emergency medications include painkillers, antihistamines for allergic reactions, anti-diarrheal medications, antacids, anti-nausea medicine, antiseptic ointment, hydrocortisone cream, aloe vera gel, calamine lotion, burn ointments, and pain relieve ointment.

    AED

A school should have an AED or Automated External Defibrillator to manage cardiac arrest. Proper training should be provided to use it.

    Protective gear

It includes disposable aprons, gloves, and masks for the person administering first aid.

    Communication devices and contact list

Contact details of parents, guardians, hospitals, and emergency services along with landlines or mobile phones.

    Documents

A form or register to maintain the record of medical emergencies.

    Storage cupboard

Proper storage solutions for keeping medicine and medical equipment.

    Disposal system

A proper disposal system to safely dispose of used medical items or hazardous waste.

    First aid manual or guidebook

A manual or guidebook illustrating emergencies and treatment procedures for reference.

Regular checking is essential to keep the first aid room in school up-to-date.

    First aid training in school

Providing first aid training to staff and older students is as essential as maintaining a well-equipped first aid room in school. First aiders not only provide immediate and basic medical attention in emergencies but also foster a positive and safe environment in school.

Providing first aid training to students also nurtures a deeper sense of responsibility, solicitude, and empathy in them. The best practices include-

    Regular training sessions

Conducting regular hands-on training sessions for staff members and students on first aid procedures, such as wound treatment, injury stabilization, choking relief, and administering CPR.

Training can be conducted using visual aids, mannequins, or role-playing scenarios.

    Education

Educating staff and students about common medical emergencies and conditions, including their symptoms.

    First aid teams

Creating first aid teams to handle emergencies in a streamlined and coordinated way to eliminate chaos.

    The bottom line

First aid in schools isn’t just about dealing with cuts and bruises; it is about creating a culture of safety and preparedness. A school’s first aid policies are a seal of assurance for parents that their children are under a protective eye.

By framing robust first-aid policies, regularly communicating with parents, and collaborating with local emergency services and hospitals, schools can fortify their first-aid response and create a safe learning environment for students.
