In school, at work, or in our personal lives, we often encounter situations that require us to speak in front of a group. Whether it’s delivering a presentation at the office or persuading someone to see things from our perspective, the desired impact is contingent on public speaking skills. The importance of public speaking skills cannot be overstated.

Being able to speak confidently in front of others not only enhances your communication abilities but also cultivates a range of essential skills that contribute to success in both professional and personal life.

In this article, we will explore public speaking skills, including what public speaking is, its types, advantages, and importance.

    What is public speaking?

Public speaking, as the name suggests, is the art of presenting ideas or information to an audience. It encompasses a wide range of activities, including speeches, lectures, demonstrations, wedding toasts, classroom presentations, and even courtroom arguments.

The process involves several steps, including audience analysis, research, content organization, and practice.

    Types of public speaking

There are three types of public speaking:

    1. Informative speaking

Informative speaking is when you speak to inform your audience or share knowledge with them. Presenting analytical reports in the office, conducting demonstrations on using a new product, and hosting hands-on workshops are all categorized under informative speaking.

    2. Persuasive speaking

Another type of public speaking is persuasive speaking. It is when you speak to persuade someone, whether your boss, colleagues, friends, or other people.
